IOTA is an open-source distributed ledger built for the internet of things. It's hard to describe IOTA in just a couple of lines so I'd suggest you have a look at the [official IOTA website](https://www.iota.org/get-started/what-is-iota). IOTA is currently being developed by the [IOTA Foundation](https://www.iota.org/the-foundation/the-iota-foundation). A non-profit based in Germany aiming at researching, developing, educating about and standardizing open source IOTA technology.
