about.

The use of the term "cursed" in the SMW community stems partly from the perception of the Hyper series, older Japanese hacks, and kaizo from outside of the mainstream. Not only are these hacks very hard, their aesthetics can feel strangely off to the modern player. They contain collages of Yoshi's Island, SMB3, and custom graphics. These images are laid on top of blocks and sprites whose behavior looks unpredictable to the untrained eye. The use of cursed as meaning both "strange, unfamiliar, discomforting" and "very difficult" is likely spreading. The former use is already derivative from older internet slang, usually describing places ('liminal spaces' comes to mind) or other things which might be in a literal sense cursed by some dark god. The convergence of the two meanings feels only natural in the gaming world. If you take a look at the average speedrun, the runner is doing something very difficult as the game engine reacts in a suspicious or discomforting manner. You can consider that ever-growing archive of speedruns proof that conquering unfamiliar or glitchy behavior can be rewarding in its own way. The game itself is a cursed artifact and the act of gaming is just how we explore it.
