So why sharks?! Well I have loved Sharks as a child and the fascination has only since grown. For so many of us the ideas of Jaws have created this idea that sharks are these mindless killers that to be feared. Sharks are to be respected, strong predators they are but these creatures are intelligent. I see sharks as beautiful and graceful creatures, the noble knights of our oceans keeping the ecosystem in balance. Without sharks there would be no ocean. Using data on shark catches, discards and mortality rates worldwide, the researchers estimated that approximately 100 million sharks are killed per year by humans. However, they add that this is a conservative estimate, and the true number could be as high as 273 million sharks killed annually by humans. This is in comparison to 14 deaths approx to humans caused by sharks annually.
