The Brattle, TRASH NIGHT's terrestrial home, shows the best in classic, cutting-edge, foreign, and art-house films. They also show first-run films and new releases of classic films, but their specialty is a repertory programming format consisting of films from a particular director, genre, or subject shown over the course of a week, or on the same weekday throughout the month. Movies have been shown at The Brattle Theatre since 1953, when Bryant Haliday and Cyrus Harvey Jr. started things off with a screening of the German film, Der Hauptmann von Köpenick (The Captain from Köpenick). Haliday and Harvey later founded Janus Films for the purpose of distributing foreign films nationwide. The non-profit Brattle Film Foundation has operated The Brattle Theatre since 2001, and now, given the ravages of COVID-19 on local arts communities, finds itself facing the same difficult questions as threaten theaters countrywide. For an event whose audience participation is centered around "yelling jokes in the dark," TRASH NIGHT has managed for NEARLY NINE YEARS to remain a boisterous, yet inclusive and good-natured, event. Please join us as we attempt to replicate the genuine TRASH NIGHT experience by adhering to the following channel guidelines: * When the movie is bad (and it's always bad), please feel free to make jokes about it, or at its expense, in chat. * When you make those jokes, simply ensure that you are not accidentally putting a joke-shaped hat on a tiny slur and ushering it out into the world. * That is basically the whole deal As we say every month: If the target of your joke, absent the context of the film, is a group or classification of person, please assume a person such as that is watching and make a different joke. Thank you for your cooperation—it legit is a better time all around when everybody is stoked to be in chat.
