Alpha Phi Alpha™, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded on December 4, 1906™ at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

**We are expansive.** We are a collective of liberators who believe in an inclusive and spacious movement. We also believe that in order to win and bring as many people with us along the way, we must move beyond the narrow nationalism that is all too prevalent in Black communities. We must ensure we are building a movement that brings all of us to the front. **We affirm the lives** of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, undocumented folks, folks with records, women, and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. Our network centers those who have been marginalized within Black liberation movements. **We are working** for a world where Black lives are no longer systematically targeted for demise. **We affirm our humanity**, our contributions to this society, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression. **The Black Panthers** were part of the larger Black Power movement, which emphasized Black pride, community control and unification for civil rights. While the Black Panthers were often portrayed as a gang, their leadership saw the organization as a political party whose goal was getting more African Americans elected to political office. They were unsuccessful on this front. The Black Panthers did, however, start a number of popular community social programs, including free breakfast programs for school children and free health clinics in 13 African American communities across the United States **The New Black Panther Party** is a black nationalist organization founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1989. Members of the original Black Panther Party say there’s no relation between the New Black Panther Party and the original Black Panthers. The United States Commission on Civil Rights and the Southern Poverty Law Center have called the New Black Panther Party a hate group.

**Black excellence** is the mindset, backed by continuous action, to look within ourselves and act in ways that progress our communities without discrediting the effect of forces outside of our communities. That’s the best way I can describe it. In other words, black excellence is the audacity to look at the place where hundreds of years of being exploited and abused, on both the mother land and beyond, has brought us and say we can rise and prosper. Of course, the self-help idea is not new to the black community (Black Wall Street and Black Panthers are prime examples). It has been believed in and practiced for as long as we have existed. It is just time to bring it to a whole new level. Notice I didn’t use the word responsibility. I know the infuriating power the word has when used to discuss the state of black people in America and globally. I am neither foolish nor ignorant to what slavery and European colonization has done and how it continues to affect our communities. But looking within our communities to find a solution to our problems can happen while still acknowledging how our history and the system affects our present and future.

As a trained Safe Zone Organizer, this community is open to communicating to others that we are open to talking about and being supportive of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning +) individuals and identities.

We can no longer wait for “them” to fix it for us. It doesn’t matter who caused it, we are the ones who have to live with the effect. We can rebuild our own neighborhoods and keep them clean. We can redefine a notion of beauty that had us hating our faces and bodies for centuries. Let us open up businesses. Let’s set aside flashiness and build wealth, because one lets you shine for a night and the other for decades. We can go out and vote for causes that advance our interest. If we don’t, who will do it for us?

★Identity matters: Who we are determines how we show up in the world. We form community based on our identities, they give us purpose, they deserve to be celebrated. ★Peer support is powerful: People who share marginalized identities help each other navigate various systems of oppression whether its asking each other for advice, organizing to build power and breakdown oppression, or simply existing as possibility models for one another. ★Solidarity is a practice: We work to understand and uplift what other communities go through. We try to inspire compassion and action that supports those communities. ★Accountability always: We have a responsibility to create supportive environments on our platforms. That means taking responsibility for monitoring chat rooms and holding ourselves to high personal standards of counteracting oppression and working to undo oppressive systems. When we make mistakes, we acknowledge it and we change our behavior.
